Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy 2010 Annual Conference Call For Papers (8:00 AM)

The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy

2010 Annual Conference

Call for Papers

The 2010 Annual Conference of The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy will be held in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 22-26 September.  The Conservancy invites proposals for papers responding to the theme “Modifying Wright’s Buildings and Their Sites: Additions, Subtractions, Adjacencies.”  Presenters will be grouped on panels, and their fifteen-minute individual presentations will be followed by discussion among the panelists and with the audience.

“Modifying Wright’s Buildings and Their Sites: Additions, Subtractions, Adjacencies” investigates significant changes made to Wright’s buildings or their contexts by Wright and others.  It offers a forum for considering questions regarding architectural integrity and interpretation relevant to building owners and site managers, preservationists, and historians.  Examples of “Additions” include Wright’s own enlargement of the Rosenbaum House in 1948, nine years after its construction; R. M. Schindler’s interventions to the Freeman House in the 1920s and 1930s; Gwathmey Siegel’s addition to the Guggenheim Museum (1992); and Kubala Washatko’s recent addition to the First Unitarian Society of Madison Meeting House.  The topic of “Subtractions,” is a particularly sensitive matter in restoration projects.  Examples might include the Wright Home and Studio in Oak Park (1974-87); the Meyer May House (1987); Graycliff (early 2000s); and the Park Hotel and Bank (under construction).  “Adjacencies” embraces the natural, cultural, and urban settings of Wright’s buildings.  Presentations might address issues such as the implications of city growth catching up to formerly isolated houses, the situation today facing the Second Jacobs House, or the challenge of designing new buildings in proximity to Wright’s work, such as the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago by Rafael Viñoly, completed in 2004.  Other important examples of new buildings adjacent to a major Wright design include the Johnson Wax Headquarters, Florida Southern College, and the Martin House in Buffalo.  At some of Wright’s buildings, notably Taliesin and Taliesin West, all three topics come into play.

Topic proposals should be in the form of an abstract (one-page, single-spaced, with the author’s name at the top) that concisely describe the theme and development of the fifteen-minute presentation.  It must be accompanied by a one-page biography or curriculum vitae and all contact information, including full name, affiliation, mailing address, email address, telephone and fax numbers.  Please specify audiovisual needs.

Proposals must be received by Friday, 12 March, 2010

Notification will be sent out by Wednesday, 31 March, 2010

Please direct questions and proposals (email submissions are welcome) to:
